Overview

Eye containing a Scleral Plomb, a device used to treat retinal detachment. Here the plomb (at centre) has been sewn into the white of the eye (sclera) beneath the transparent conjunctiva, the membrane covering the front of the sclera and lining the inside of the eyelids. Retinal detachment occurs when the light-sensitive retina inside the eye separates from the outer layers at the back of the eye, resulting in a gradual loss of vision. Detachment may be due to a major eye injury, but more usually occurs without specific cause. The plomb helps to keep the retina in position, thereby restoring vision.
